My Injury Prevention for Musicians class is designed to help musicians prevent and rehabilitate musical instrument-based overuse injuries. It will also address injuries from other sources that might affect our ability to play our instruments. We look at postural imbalances, faulty habits, and the reality of maybe just too many hours in the practice room. Through yoga therapy, pilates rehabilitation, aspects of physical therapy, stress reduction and breathing techniques, each student develops an individual program of stretching, strengthening, and relaxing for optimum health. More than just an exercise routine, these programs are a unique design for each student’s needs, and may include modifications in posture, alignment, behaviors, and practice techniques. Segments in this class will include general information about ways to avoid injury and what to do if one becomes injured. During some segments a brief movement class will be offered, suited to all present. If a student has been diagnosed with a serious illness or injury, that information should be given at the initial class session, along with a release letter from their doctor saying it is all right for this student to start an exercise program.
I encourage students in this class to keep a log of their body and its relationship to their instrument and how they’re progressing though time. This includes a record of their individual program, modifications made, number of times per week practice, and activities that better or bother the issue.
My aim is that by the end of the class, each student will increase their body awareness, learn relaxation and healing techniques, learn strategies for caring for their own body in relationship to their instrument and music making, acquire knowledge of where to go and what to do if an injury occurs, and learn strategies for staying injury-free, as well as strategies for coping mentally and emotionally with an injury should it occur.
