My educational philosophy is that all students are unique individuals, with very specific, individual needs. Creating an atmosphere of learning that encourages an environment of growth, whether it be physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual is of utmost importance to me. I want each student to reach their fullest potential at a tempo and in a space that is appropriate for their own needs. The positive benefits of this approach are astounding.
I believe that teaching and learning are lifelong processes where dedication, perseverance, and hard work are key components. I have discovered new strategies, new ideas, and new philosophies throughout my career as a teacher. Changing one’s educational philosophy over time is a good thing. It is a function of growth, shows discoveries of new research, or re-tooling old ideas. I always bring this philosophy of growth and change to my teaching space.
I believe a teacher can be a guide, but not a model for imitation. I try to teach students how to learn, and foster the development of curiosity, encouraging students to research inwardly, and through all possible modalities in order to broaden their horizons. Individual expression is to be encouraged, and all learning styles are respected. I believe in having an open mind, a positive attitude, and high expectations in both teaching and learning. I believe that I owe it to my students, as well as to the greater community, to bring consistency, diligence, and generosity to my job as educator in the hopes that I might ultimately inspire and encourage such traits in others. My success as a teacher in musical realms has been expressed in the dozens of former students of mine who have gone on to have professional careers as performers, educators, recording artists, arts administrators, and freelancers.
